Dirichlet's unit theorem as a K1 computation

Builds on Dirichlet's unit theoremK-groups of rings of integersK1 of a ringSK1Algebraic number fieldGroup of units of a ring

Statement

Let FF be an algebraic number field with ring of integers 𝒪F\mathcal{O}_F, with r1r_1 real embeddings and r2r_2 pairs of complex conjugate non-real embeddings. Let μ(F)\mu(F) be the finite group of roots of unity in FF. Then the determinant induces an isomorphism K1(𝒪F)≅𝒪F×K_1(\mathcal{O}_F) \cong \mathcal{O}_F^\times, and K1(𝒪F)≅μ(F)×ℤr1+r2−1.K_1(\mathcal{O}_F) \cong \mu(F) \times \Z^{r_1 + r_2 - 1}. In particular K1(𝒪F)K_1(\mathcal{O}_F) is a finitely generated abelian group of rank r1+r2−1r_1 + r_2 - 1.

Remarks

For any commutative ring AA the determinant gives a split surjection K1(A)→A×K_1(A) \to A^\times with kernel SK1(A)SK_1(A), see K1 of a ring and SK1. For A=𝒪FA = \mathcal{O}_F, Bass, Milnor and Serre proved SK1(𝒪F)=0SK_1(\mathcal{O}_F) = 0, so K1(𝒪F)=𝒪F×K_1(\mathcal{O}_F) = \mathcal{O}_F^\times. The second isomorphism is then Dirichlet's unit theorem.

Example: for F=ℚ(2)F = \Q(\sqrt{2}), K1(ℤ[2])≅{±1}×ℤK_1(\Z[\sqrt{2}]) \cong \{\pm 1\} \times \Z, generated by −1-1 and the unit 1+21 + \sqrt{2}. For F=ℚF = \Q, K1(ℤ)={±1}K_1(\Z) = \{\pm 1\}, the determinants of invertible integer matrices.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the first case of the pattern found by Borel: the rank of Kn(𝒪F)K_n(\mathcal{O}_F) depends only on nn, r1r_1 and r2r_2. For n=1n = 1 the logarithmic embedding of units plays the role that Borel's regulator plays for odd n≥3n \ge 3. Its covolume is the classical regulator that appears in the class number formula.
