Field theory and polynomials Definition
Discrete valuation
Definition
Let be a field. A discrete valuation on is a valuation such that . An element with is a uniformizer of .
Remarks
Example: for a prime , the p-adic valuation on is a discrete valuation. It is a valuation, and for every , so it is onto ; the prime is a uniformizer. Example: for a field , the order of vanishing at on , given by for polynomials with , is a discrete valuation with uniformizer . Non-example: the trivial valuation on a field, with for all , takes values in but has . Some texts call a valuation discrete when its value group is isomorphic to ; dividing by a positive generator then gives a valuation onto , called normalized. Every is with . The set is a discrete valuation ring with maximal ideal .
