Definition

Let kk be a field and let XX be a symbol. A formal Laurent series in XX over kk is a family (an)n∈ℤ(a_n)_{n \in \Z} of elements of kk with the following property. There is N∈ℤN \in \Z with an=0a_n = 0 for all n<Nn < N. It is written ∑n≥NanXn\sum_{n \ge N} a_n X^n. The set k((X))k((X)) of these series has the operations ∑nanXn+∑nbnXn=∑n(an+bn)Xn,(∑nanXn)(∑nbnXn)=∑n(∑i+j=naibj)Xn.\sum_n a_n X^n + \sum_n b_n X^n = \sum_n (a_n + b_n) X^n, \qquad \Big(\sum_n a_n X^n\Big)\Big(\sum_n b_n X^n\Big) = \sum_n \Big(\sum_{i + j = n} a_i b_j\Big) X^n. With these operations k((X))k((X)) is a field, the field of formal Laurent series over kk.

Remarks

The inner sum ∑i+j=naibj\sum_{i + j = n} a_i b_j is finite: if ai=0a_i = 0 for i<Ni < N and bj=0b_j = 0 for j<Mj < M, only the pairs with N≤i≤n−MN \le i \le n - M contribute. Example: f=X−X2f = X - X^2 has the inverse g=∑n≥−1Xn=X−1+1+X+⋯g = \sum_{n \ge -1} X^n = X^{-1} + 1 + X + \cdots; indeed fg=(1−X)(1+X+X2+⋯ )=1f g = (1 - X)(1 + X + X^2 + \cdots) = 1. Non-example: the family with an=1a_n = 1 for all n∈ℤn \in \Z is not a formal Laurent series, since no NN bounds its negative powers. Its square would need the infinite sum ∑i+j=01\sum_{i + j = 0} 1. The map v(f)=min⁡{n:an≠0}v(f) = \min \set{n : a_n \ne 0} for f≠0f \ne 0 is a discrete valuation on k((X))k((X)) with uniformizer XX, and k((X))k((X)) is complete for it. Its valuation ring is the ring k[ ⁣[X] ⁣]k[\![X]\!] of formal power series, and k((X))k((X)) is the field of fractions of k[ ⁣[X] ⁣]k[\![X]\!].
