Definition
Let be a set and let be a family of topological spaces. The disjoint union of the family is the set For each , the canonical injection is . The disjoint union topology on is the set of all such that is open in for every .
Remarks
It is the final topology on for the family of maps . Each is an open topological embedding, and the image of each is open and closed in . Universal property: a map to a topological space is continuous if and only if is continuous for every .
Example: if each is a one-point space, then every subset of is open, so is the discrete space on . Indeed, the preimage of any subset under each is empty or a point, and both are open.
Non-example: let and be two copies of a two-point space with the trivial topology, and let . The trivial topology on the four-point set is not the disjoint union topology. The set has open preimages in both pieces, but it is not open in the trivial topology.
Notation: or ; for two spaces, .
