Definition

Let KK be a simplicial set, with nn-simplices KnK_n and structure maps θ∗ ⁣:Kn→Km\theta^* \colon K_n \to K_m for order-preserving θ ⁣:[m]→[n]\theta \colon [m] \to [n]. Let ∣Δn∣\abs{\Delta^n} be the standard topological nn-simplex, and let θ∗ ⁣:∣Δm∣→∣Δn∣\theta_* \colon \abs{\Delta^m} \to \abs{\Delta^n} be the affine map sending the vertex eie_i to eθ(i)e_{\theta(i)}. Give each set KnK_n the discrete topology. The geometric realization of KK is the quotient space ∣K∣=(⨆n≥0Kn×∣Δn∣)/∼\abs{K} = \Bigl( \bigsqcup_{n \ge 0} K_n \times \abs{\Delta^n} \Bigr) \Big/ \sim of the disjoint union, where ∼\sim is the equivalence relation generated by (θ∗x,t)∼(x,θ∗t)for all θ ⁣:[m]→[n], x∈Kn, t∈∣Δm∣.(\theta^* x, t) \sim (x, \theta_* t) \quad \text{for all } \theta \colon [m] \to [n], \ x \in K_n, \ t \in \abs{\Delta^m}.

Remarks

A simplicial map f ⁣:K→Lf \colon K \to L induces a continuous map ∣f∣ ⁣:∣K∣→∣L∣\abs{f} \colon \abs{K} \to \abs{L}, so realization is a functor. It is left adjoint to the singular simplicial set functor: continuous maps ∣K∣→X\abs{K} \to X correspond to simplicial maps K→Sing⁡XK \to \operatorname{Sing} X. Each point of ∣K∣\abs{K} has a unique representative (x,t)(x, t) with xx nondegenerate and tt in the interior of ∣Δn∣\abs{\Delta^n}. It follows that ∣K∣\abs{K} is a CW complex with one nn-cell for each nondegenerate nn-simplex.

Example: for the standard simplex Δn\Delta^n, the realization ∣Δn∣\abs{\Delta^n} is the topological nn-simplex, since every simplex of Δn\Delta^n is θ∗\theta^* of the top simplex id⁡[n]\id_{[n]}.

Example: the quotient Δ1/∂Δ1\Delta^1 / \partial \Delta^1 has one nondegenerate 00-simplex and one nondegenerate 11-simplex whose two faces are equal, so its realization is a circle.

Non-example: the disjoint union ⨆nKn×∣Δn∣\bigsqcup_n K_n \times \abs{\Delta^n} without the relation ∼\sim is not the realization; for K=Δ1K = \Delta^1 it has infinitely many components, while ∣Δ1∣\abs{\Delta^1} is an interval.

Some authors use the category of compactly generated spaces, where the realization functor preserves finite products.
