Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let A⊆XA \subseteq X be a subspace. For n≥0n \ge 0 let DnD^n be the closed unit ball in ℝn\R^n with boundary Sn−1S^{n-1}, where S−1=∅S^{-1} = \emptyset. A relative CW structure on (X,A)(X, A) is a sequence of subspaces A=X−1⊆X0⊆X1⊆⋯A = X^{-1} \subseteq X^0 \subseteq X^1 \subseteq \cdots of XX such that:

  1. For each n≥0n \ge 0 there are a set JnJ_n and maps φj ⁣:Sn−1→Xn−1\varphi_j \colon S^{n-1} \to X^{n-1}, j∈Jnj \in J_n, with the following property. The space XnX^n is the pushout of Xn−1←⨆j∈JnSn−1→⨆j∈JnDnX^{n-1} \leftarrow \bigsqcup_{j \in J_n} S^{n-1} \to \bigsqcup_{j \in J_n} D^n, where the left map is given by the φj\varphi_j. That is, XnX^n is the quotient of the disjoint union Xn−1⊔⨆jDnX^{n-1} \sqcup \bigsqcup_{j} D^n that identifies each x∈Sn−1x \in S^{n-1} in the jj-th disk with φj(x)\varphi_j(x).
  2. X=⋃n≥−1XnX = \bigcup_{n \ge -1} X^n.
  3. A subset C⊆XC \subseteq X is closed if and only if C∩XnC \cap X^n is closed in XnX^n for every nn.

A relative CW complex is a pair (X,A)(X, A) with a relative CW structure. The images of the open disks Dn∖Sn−1D^n \setminus S^{n-1} are the nn-cells of XX relative to AA.

Remarks

When A=∅A = \emptyset, a relative CW complex is the same as a CW complex. If AA is a subcomplex of a CW complex XX, then (X,A)(X, A) is a relative CW complex.

Example: let A=S1A = S^1 and X=D2X = D^2. Take X0=X1=S1X^0 = X^1 = S^1 with J0=J1=∅J_0 = J_1 = \emptyset, and X2=D2X^2 = D^2 with one 22-cell attached by the identity S1→S1S^1 \to S^1. Clause 1 holds since D2D^2 is the pushout of S1←S1→D2S^1 \leftarrow S^1 \to D^2, and clauses 2 and 3 hold since the filtration stops at X2=XX^2 = X.

Non-example: let A={0}A = \set{0} and X={0}∪{1/m:m≥1}⊆ℝX = \set{0} \cup \set{1/m : m \ge 1} \subseteq \R. The only cells available are 00-cells, so X=X0X = X^0. Clause 1 then forces X0X^0 to be the disjoint union of AA and a discrete set, but in XX the points 1/m1/m converge to 00, so clause 1 fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
