Electromagnetic stress–energy tensor
Builds on Electromagnetic tensorPoynting vectorMaxwell stress tensorTensor field
Definition
Work in Minkowski space with coordinates and metric . Let be the electromagnetic tensor and the vacuum permeability. The electromagnetic stress–energy tensor is the symmetric tensor field with summation over repeated indices.
Remarks
In terms of the electric field and the magnetic field :
- is the energy density.
- , where is the Poynting vector.
- , where is the Maxwell stress tensor.
Example: for a static uniform field , , the tensor is ; the last entry is a tension along the field.
The tensor is traceless, , as a direct computation shows in four dimensions. For solutions of Maxwell's equations without sources, ; the component is Poynting's theorem and the components are the momentum balance.
Non-example: the tensor without the trace term gives when , which is twice the correct energy density.
