Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let AA be a commutative RR-algebra. Then AA is étale over RR, and the structure map R→AR \to A is an étale morphism, if both conditions hold:

  1. AA is a finitely presented RR-algebra.
  2. AA is formally étale over RR, in the following sense.

Let CC be a commutative RR-algebra, let J⊆CJ \subseteq C be an ideal with J2=0J^2 = 0, and let u ⁣:A→C/Ju \colon A \to C/J be an RR-algebra homomorphism. Then there is exactly one RR-algebra homomorphism v ⁣:A→Cv \colon A \to C whose composite with C→C/JC \to C/J is uu.

Remarks

Condition 2 says that the lift required by formal smoothness exists and is unique. Equivalent forms: AA is smooth and unramified over RR; or AA is finitely presented, flat and unramified over RR.

Example: let f∈R[x]f \in R[x] be monic and let A=R[x]/(f)A = R[x]/(f); if the class of f′f' is a unit in AA, then AA is étale over RR. For instance, R[x]/(x2−a)R[x]/(x^2 - a) is étale when 2a2a is a unit of RR, since (2x)2=4a(2x)^2 = 4a in AA. Over a field kk, a finite separable extension LL of kk is étale, and the étale kk-algebras are exactly the finite products of such fields.

Non-example: A=k[x]A = k[x] over a field kk is smooth and finitely presented, but a map A→C/JA \to C/J has many lifts: xx may go to any preimage of u(x)u(x). So uniqueness in clause 2 fails; accordingly ΩA/k=A dx≠0\Omega_{A/k} = A \, dx \ne 0, see Kähler differentials.
