Differential geometry Surfaces in Euclidean space Theorem
Euler's theorem on normal curvatures
Builds on Principal curvatureSecond fundamental formShape operatorRegular surface
Statement
Let be a regular surface with a smooth unit normal field near a point . Let be the principal curvatures of at , with orthonormal principal directions . For a unit vector , let be the normal curvature in the direction , where is the second fundamental form. If , then
Remarks
The proof is one line: with the shape operator , and , so the cross terms vanish. It follows that and are the maximum and the minimum of the normal curvature over all directions. Example: on a cylinder of radius with the inner normal, around the cylinder and along it. A direction at angle to the circular sections has normal curvature . The normal curvature equals the signed curvature of the normal section, the curve cut out of by the plane through spanned by and the normal.
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is the diagonal form of the quadratic form in an orthonormal eigenbasis of the self-adjoint map . It explains why the Gaussian curvature and the mean curvature capture the whole second-order shape, up to the choice of principal directions. The sign of decides whether the normal curvature keeps one sign (elliptic point), changes sign (hyperbolic point), or vanishes in one direction (parabolic point). The directions with at a hyperbolic point are the asymptotic directions, at angles with .
