definition

Even and odd permutations

Definition

Let n≥2n \geq 2 and let σ∈Sn\sigma \in S_n. The permutation σ\sigma is even when sgn⁡(σ)=1\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma) = 1, and odd when sgn⁡(σ)=−1\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma) = -1.

Remarks

The identity is even and each transposition is odd. A product of two even or two odd permutations is even, and a product of an even and an odd permutation is odd. For n≥2n \geq 2, SnS_n has n!/2n!/2 even and n!/2n!/2 odd permutations. The odd permutations do not form a subgroup, but they form a coset of AnA_n.

Explanations

L1 human

Each permutation is even or odd, like each integer. Even and odd combine by the same rules as for integers. Exactly half of the permutations are even.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
