definition

Sign of a permutation

Definition

Let n≥2n \geq 2 and let σ∈Sn\sigma \in S_n. Write σ=τ1τ2⋯τm\sigma = \tau_1 \tau_2 \cdots \tau_m as a product of transpositions. The sign of σ\sigma is sgn⁡(σ)=(−1)m\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma) = (-1)^m.

Remarks

The parity of mm does not depend on the decomposition, so the sign is well defined. Equivalently, sgn⁡(σ)=(−1)N(σ)\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma) = (-1)^{N(\sigma)}, where N(σ)N(\sigma) is the number of pairs i<ji < j with σ(i)>σ(j)\sigma(i) > \sigma(j). The sign of a permutation is the determinant of its permutation matrix.

Explanations

L1 human

Each permutation is a product of swaps, and the number of swaps is always even or always odd. The sign records this: +1+1 for an even number and −1-1 for an odd number. A single swap has sign −1-1.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

10 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
