Transposition

Definition

Let XX be a set and let a,b∈Xa, b \in X with a≠ba \neq b. The transposition (a b)(a\ b) is the permutation of XX that sends aa to bb, sends bb to aa, and fixes each other element of XX.

Remarks

A transposition is a 22-cycle in cycle notation, and (a b)=(b a)(a\ b) = (b\ a). Each transposition is its own inverse, so it has order 22. The symmetric group SnS_n contains exactly (n2)\binom{n}{2} transpositions.

Explanations

L1 human

A transposition swaps two things and leaves everything else in place. If you do the same swap two times, you are back at the start. All permutations can be built from transpositions.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

13 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
