Exact equation
Definition
Let be an open subset of and let be continuous functions. The equation also written , is exact on if there is a differentiable function with Such a function is a potential function of the equation.
Remarks
Let the equation be exact. Then a differentiable function on an interval, with graph in , is a solution if and only if is constant. This follows from the chain rule: . So the solutions are given implicitly by . Example: is exact with , and its solutions satisfy . The test for exactness decides whether an equation is exact.
Explanations
L1 human
An exact equation is the total derivative of one function set to zero. So stays constant along each solution, and the solution curves are the level curves of . To solve the equation, you find by integration.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
