statement theorem
Test for exactness
Statement
Let be an open rectangle in . Let be continuous functions such that the partial derivatives and exist and are continuous on . Then the equation is exact on if and only if
Remarks
The condition is necessary on each open set: if and , the mixed partial derivatives of are equal, so . For the converse, fix and set . The converse holds on each simply connected open set. It can fail on other sets: satisfies the condition on , but it is not exact there.
Explanations
L1 human
If exists, then and are its two partial derivatives. Their cross derivatives must agree, because the order of differentiation does not matter for nice functions. On a rectangle, this easy test is also enough.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
