Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be open, and let f,g ⁣:Ω→ℝnf, g \colon \Omega \to \R^n be smooth vector fields. Consider the single-input control-affine control system x′=f(x)+g(x)ux' = f(x) + g(x) u with u∈ℝu \in \R, and let x0∈Ωx_0 \in \Omega. The system is locally feedback linearizable at x0x_0 if there are the following data. An open neighbourhood W⊆ΩW \subseteq \Omega of x0x_0, and a smooth diffeomorphism Φ\Phi from WW onto an open subset of ℝn\R^n. Smooth functions α,β ⁣:W→ℝ\alpha, \beta \colon W \to \R with β(x)≠0\beta(x) \ne 0 for all x∈Wx \in W. These data must satisfy two conditions:

  1. under the feedback u=α(x)+β(x)vu = \alpha(x) + \beta(x) v, the new state z=Φ(x)z = \Phi(x) satisfies z′=Az+Bvz' = A z + B v for a real n×nn \times n matrix AA and a vector B∈ℝnB \in \R^n;
  2. the linear system z′=Az+Bvz' = A z + B v is controllable.

Feedback linearization is the construction of such Φ\Phi, α\alpha and β\beta.

Remarks

Example: the pendulum x1′=x2x_1' = x_2, x2′=−sin⁡x1+ux_2' = -\sin x_1 + u has f(x)=(x2,−sin⁡x1)f(x) = (x_2, -\sin x_1) and g(x)=(0,1)g(x) = (0, 1); with Φ=id⁡\Phi = \id, α(x)=sin⁡x1\alpha(x) = \sin x_1 and β=1\beta = 1 one gets z1′=z2z_1' = z_2, z2′=vz_2' = v, which is controllable. Non-example: with g≡0g \equiv 0 the input has no effect, so clause 2 fails for every choice of Φ\Phi, α\alpha and β\beta. Write adfg=[f,g]\mathrm{ad}_f g = [f, g] for the Lie bracket. The system is locally feedback linearizable at x0x_0 if and only if two conditions hold. The vectors g,adfg,…,adfn−1gg, \mathrm{ad}_f g, \ldots, \mathrm{ad}_f^{n-1} g are linearly independent at x0x_0. The distribution spanned by g,adfg,…,adfn−2gg, \mathrm{ad}_f g, \ldots, \mathrm{ad}_f^{n-2} g is involutive near x0x_0. The related input–output linearization only makes the map from vv to a chosen output linear, and may leave internal dynamics.
