Definition
Let be a field and let be the polynomial ring in one variable over . The field of rational functions is the field of fractions of . Its elements are the fractions with and , where if and only if . More generally, for variables , the field is the field of fractions of .
Remarks
Example: in , since . Non-example: no element of satisfies , since would give , which is impossible. So is a field extension in which is transcendental over . An element of is a formal fraction, not a function on : over , the fraction is a nonzero element, although vanishes at every point of . Over or , the elements correspond to rational functions in the sense of analysis.
