Fixed-point property

Definition
Let be a topological space. has the fixed-point property if for every continuous map there is a point with .
Remarks
Example: the interval has the fixed-point property. For continuous , the function satisfies and , so has a zero by the intermediate value theorem. Non-example: the circle fails it, because the rotation is continuous and has no fixed point. If has the fixed-point property and is homeomorphic to , then has it as well. A retract of a space with the fixed-point property also has it. The Brouwer fixed-point theorem states that the closed unit ball of has the fixed-point property.
