Statement

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension of algebraic number fields of degree nn, with rings of integers ๐’ชKโІ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_K \subseteq \mathcal{O}_L. Let ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} be a nonzero prime ideal of ๐’ชK\mathcal{O}_K, with factorisation ๐”ญ๐’ชL=๐”“1e1โ‹ฏ๐”“geg\mathfrak{p}\mathcal{O}_L = \mathfrak{P}_1^{e_1} \cdots \mathfrak{P}_g^{e_g} into distinct prime ideals. Let fi=[๐’ชL/๐”“i:๐’ชK/๐”ญ]f_i = [\mathcal{O}_L/\mathfrak{P}_i : \mathcal{O}_K/\mathfrak{p}] be the residue degrees. Then โˆ‘i=1geifi=n.\sum_{i=1}^{g} e_i f_i = n. If moreover L/KL/K is a Galois extension, then e1=โ‹ฏ=eg=ee_1 = \cdots = e_g = e and f1=โ‹ฏ=fg=ff_1 = \cdots = f_g = f, and efg=nefg = n.

Remarks

Proof idea: count elements of ๐’ชL/๐”ญ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_L/\mathfrak{p}\mathcal{O}_L. It is a vector space over ๐’ชK/๐”ญ\mathcal{O}_K/\mathfrak{p} of dimension nn, by localising at ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p}, where ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_L becomes free of rank nn. By the Chinese remainder theorem it is the product of the rings ๐’ชL/๐”“iei\mathcal{O}_L/\mathfrak{P}_i^{e_i}, and each has dimension eifie_i f_i, using the filtration by powers of ๐”“i\mathfrak{P}_i. In the Galois case, the Galois group acts transitively on the ๐”“i\mathfrak{P}_i, and conjugate primes have the same ee and ff.

Example: in โ„š(โˆ’5)/โ„š\Q(\sqrt{-5})/\Q, with n=2n = 2: the prime 22 has e=2,f=1,g=1e = 2, f = 1, g = 1; the prime 33 has e=1,f=1,g=2e = 1, f = 1, g = 2; the prime 1111 is inert since โˆ’5-5 is not a square modulo 1111, with e=1,f=2,g=1e = 1, f = 2, g = 1. In each case efg=2efg = 2.

Going deeper

For a student

The identity limits the possible splitting types and is used constantly in computations. In a Galois extension, efe f is the order of the decomposition group of any prime over ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p}, and ee is the order of its inertia group. For a cyclic extension of prime degree โ„“\ell, the identity leaves only three cases: split completely (g=โ„“g = \ell), inert (f=โ„“f = \ell) or totally ramified (e=โ„“e = \ell).
