Fundamental solution
Definition
Let be a linear differential operator on with smooth coefficients. A distribution is a continuous linear functional on the space of test functions on . Let be the Dirac delta at the origin, the distribution . A fundamental solution of is a distribution on with in the sense of distributions. Explicitly, this means for every test function , where is the formal transpose of .
Remarks
Example: on , the Heaviside function , with for and for , is a fundamental solution of . Indeed, for a test function one has . Example: on , is a fundamental solution of the Laplacian, and on , is one. Non-example: on , the constant function is not a fundamental solution of , since its derivative is and not . A fundamental solution is not unique: adding any distribution with gives another one. If has constant coefficients and is a test function, then is smooth and solves . Every nonzero operator with constant coefficients has a fundamental solution, by the Malgrange–Ehrenpreis theorem.
