Gelfand's trick

Builds on Locally compact groupHaar measureGelfand pair

Statement

Let GG be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure, and let KK be a compact subgroup of GG. Suppose that there is a continuous automorphism θ\theta of GG with θ2=id\theta^2 = \mathrm{id} such that θ(g)∈Kg−1Kfor every g∈G.\theta(g) \in K g^{-1} K \quad \text{for every } g \in G. Then the algebra L1(K\G/K)L^1(K \backslash G / K) of integrable functions ff with f(k1gk2)=f(g)f(k_1 g k_2) = f(g) for k1,k2∈Kk_1, k_2 \in K is commutative under convolution. In other words, (G,K)(G, K) is a Gelfand pair.

Remarks

Proof idea. The modular function Δ\Delta is trivial on the compact group KK, so the hypothesis gives Δ(θ(g))=Δ(g)−1\Delta(\theta(g)) = \Delta(g)^{-1}; an involutive automorphism preserves Haar measure and Δ\Delta, so Δ=1\Delta = 1 and GG is unimodular. For a bi-KK-invariant function ff write fθ=f∘θf^\theta = f \circ \theta and f∨(g)=f(g−1)f^\vee(g) = f(g^{-1}); the hypothesis gives fθ=f∨f^\theta = f^\vee. Since θ\theta is an automorphism, (f1∗f2)θ=f1θ∗f2θ(f_1 * f_2)^\theta = f_1^\theta * f_2^\theta, and by unimodularity (f1∗f2)∨=f2∨∗f1∨(f_1 * f_2)^\vee = f_2^\vee * f_1^\vee. Comparing these gives f1∨∗f2∨=f2∨∗f1∨f_1^\vee * f_2^\vee = f_2^\vee * f_1^\vee for all bi-invariant f1,f2f_1, f_2, and f↦f∨f \mapsto f^\vee is a bijection of L1(K\G/K)L^1(K \backslash G / K).

Examples. For GG abelian and K={e}K = \set{e}, take θ(g)=g−1\theta(g) = g^{-1}. For G=SL(2,ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}(2, \R) and K=SO(2)K = \mathrm{SO}(2), take θ(g)=(gT)−1\theta(g) = (g^{T})^{-1}: writing g=k1ak2g = k_1 a k_2 with aa diagonal, one finds θ(g)=k1a−1k2∈Kg−1K\theta(g) = k_1 a^{-1} k_2 \in K g^{-1} K. The same argument with the Cartan decomposition G=KAKG = K A K shows that (G,K)(G, K) is a Gelfand pair for every connected semisimple Lie group GG with finite centre and maximal compact subgroup KK.

Going deeper

For a student

The trick is the standard way to prove that the pairs coming from Riemannian symmetric spaces are Gelfand pairs, with θ\theta the Cartan involution. Once (G,K)(G, K) is a Gelfand pair, the theory of spherical functions and the spherical transform applies. The same idea for a finite group GG and subgroup KK shows that the permutation representation on G/KG / K is multiplicity free.
