Definition

Let kk be an algebraically closed field and let CC be a smooth projective connected curve over kk. Let ΩC\Omega_C be its sheaf of differentials. The genus of CC is g(C)=dim⁡kH0(C,ΩC),g(C) = \dim_k H^0(C, \Omega_C), the dimension of the space of regular differential 11-forms on CC. Let CC be an integral curve, possibly singular or not projective. The geometric genus of CC is the genus of the smooth projective curve with the same function field. This curve is the normalization of a projective closure of CC.

Remarks

For a smooth projective connected curve, Serre duality gives g(C)=dim⁡kH1(C,𝒪C)g(C) = \dim_k H^1(C, \mathcal{O}_C), so the genus equals the arithmetic genus. Example: on ℙ1\mathbb{P}^1 one has Ω=𝒪(−2)\Omega = \mathcal{O}(-2), which has no nonzero global sections, so g(ℙ1)=0g(\mathbb{P}^1) = 0. Example: the smooth projective curve EE with affine equation y2=x3−xy^2 = x^3 - x, in characteristic not 22, has the form ω=dx/y\omega = dx/y, regular and nowhere zero on EE, and g(E)=1g(E) = 1. Non-example of the equality with the arithmetic genus: the nodal cubic y2=x2(x+1)y^2 = x^2(x + 1) is singular, its normalization is ℙ1\mathbb{P}^1, so its geometric genus is 00, while its arithmetic genus is 11. Over ℂ\C, the genus equals the topological genus of C(ℂ)C(\C) as a closed orientable surface.
