Green–Ampt infiltration model
Definition
Consider a uniform soil with saturated hydraulic conductivity , initial water content and saturated water content . From time on, its surface is kept ponded with negligible depth. Set and let be the suction head at the wetting front. The Green–Ampt model assumes that:
- the soil above a sharp wetting front at depth is saturated and the soil below has water content ;
- the flow in the saturated zone obeys Darcy's law with conductivity and a head difference over the length .
The cumulative infiltration is , and the infiltration rate satisfies the ordinary differential equation
Remarks
Example: separating variables, , and integrating from gives the implicit solution For small this gives , and for large the rate tends to .
Non-example: a soil made of a clay layer over sand does not satisfy the uniformity assumption, and a single front with one value of does not describe its infiltration.
The model is a sharp-front approximation of Richards' equation; a non-negligible ponding depth adds to the head difference in clause 2. Under rainfall at a constant rate , the surface ponds only if , and the model then applies only from the time of ponding on.
