Green's function for the Laplacian
Builds on Domain in the complex planeHarmonic functionBoundaryLaplacian
Definition
Let be a bounded domain in with boundary , and let . A Green's function of with pole at is a function such that:
- is harmonic on .
- The function extends to a harmonic function on a neighbourhood of .
- as , for every .
Remarks
If such a function exists, it is unique, by the maximum principle applied to the difference of two of them. It exists whenever the Dirichlet problem on is solvable for continuous boundary data: take , where is harmonic with boundary values . Example: for the unit disc, . Here is harmonic on the disc because there, and on one has , so on the boundary. Non-example: for , the function on the unit disc satisfies clauses 1 and 2, but at the boundary point its limit is , so clause 3 fails. In the sense of distributions, , where is the Laplacian. The Green's function is positive on and symmetric: . In with , the analogous definition uses the singularity in place of , up to normalizing constants.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
