Gross–Pitaevskii equation
Builds on Nonlinear Schrödinger equationLaplacian
Definition
Let , let and be constants, and let be a given function, the external potential. The Gross–Pitaevskii equation is the equation for an unknown function , , where is the Laplacian in . The constant measures the strength of the interaction, repulsive for and attractive for .
Remarks
For it is, after scaling, the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. A standing wave solves it exactly when solves the stationary equation , and is the chemical potential.
Example: for and , the constant state solves the stationary equation with , since and .
Non-example: if is not constant, then no nonzero constant solves the stationary equation, because would force to be constant.
The ground state minimises the Gross–Pitaevskii energy under the constraint , the number of particles.
