Definition

Let pp be a prime and let kk be an algebraic closure of the finite field ๐”ฝp\F_p. Let ๐†\mathbf{G} be a connected reductive linear algebraic group over kk. A Steinberg endomorphism of ๐†\mathbf{G} is an endomorphism FF of the algebraic group ๐†\mathbf{G} with the following property. Some power FmF^m with mโ‰ฅ1m \ge 1 is the Frobenius endomorphism of ๐†\mathbf{G} for some structure of ๐†\mathbf{G} over a finite subfield of kk. A finite group of Lie type is a group ๐†F={gโˆˆ๐†:F(g)=g}\mathbf{G}^F = \set{g \in \mathbf{G} : F(g) = g} for such ๐†\mathbf{G} and FF.

Remarks

The group ๐†F\mathbf{G}^F is always finite. Example: take ๐†=GLn(k)\mathbf{G} = \mathrm{GL}_n(k) and let FF raise every matrix entry to the power qq, where qq is a power of pp. Then FF is the Frobenius endomorphism for the standard structure over ๐”ฝq\F_q, and ๐†F=GLn(๐”ฝq)\mathbf{G}^F = \mathrm{GL}_n(\F_q), since the elements of kk fixed by xโ†ฆxqx \mapsto x^q are exactly the elements of ๐”ฝq\F_q. Non-example: GLn(โ„)\mathrm{GL}_n(\R) for nโ‰ฅ1n \ge 1 is not a finite group of Lie type, since it is infinite. Many authors also call the simple groups obtained from ๐†F\mathbf{G}^F, such as PSLn(๐”ฝq)\mathrm{PSL}_n(\F_q), groups of Lie type. The Chevalley groups over ๐”ฝq\F_q come from the case where ๐†\mathbf{G} is split over ๐”ฝq\F_q and FF is the corresponding Frobenius endomorphism. The twisted groups, such as the unitary groups, come from the other Steinberg endomorphisms. For the Suzuki groups and the Ree groups, the map FF is not a Frobenius endomorphism, but F2F^2 is one.
