Hartmann number
Builds on MagnetohydrodynamicsDimensionless numbers in fluid mechanicsViscosity
Definition
Consider a flow in magnetohydrodynamics of a fluid with electrical conductivity , dynamic viscosity , density and kinematic viscosity . Let be a characteristic magnetic field strength and a characteristic length. The Hartmann number is
Remarks
It is a dimensionless number: has the units of a force per volume per speed, as does , so has no units. Example, Hartmann flow: a fluid driven by a constant pressure gradient between the planes , in a transverse field . In the limit of small magnetic Reynolds number, its velocity profile is proportional to . For large this is flat in the middle and drops to in layers of thickness about near the walls. For the profile becomes the parabola of plane Poiseuille flow. Non-example: is the Stuart number, or interaction parameter, which compares the Lorentz force with inertia, not with viscosity; it equals .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
