Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure , and let be a compact open subgroup of . The Hecke algebra is the set of functions such that:
- for all and ;
- has compact support.
Its product is convolution:
Remarks
Each double coset is compact and open, and a compact set meets only finitely many of them. So the indicator functions form a basis of as a vector space. The function is the unit element.
Example: discrete and , with the counting measure. Both clauses say only that is finitely supported, and . So is the group algebra .
Example: and . Then is commutative. It is generated by the indicators of and and the inverse of the latter.
Non-example: for and , the indicator of fails clause 1, since it is not constant on the coset .
When is totally disconnected, the union of the over all compact open is the full Hecke algebra of locally constant compactly supported functions.
