Definition

Let GG be a connected noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite centre, and KK a maximal compact subgroup. Let X=G/KX = G / K be the associated Riemannian symmetric space, with GG-invariant measure dxdx. Let G=NAKG = N A K be an Iwasawa decomposition, with 𝔞\mathfrak a the Lie algebra of AA, and for g∈Gg \in G let A(g)∈𝔞A(g) \in \mathfrak a be defined by g∈Nexp⁡(A(g))Kg \in N \exp(A(g)) K. Let MM be the centralizer of AA in KK, and let B=K/MB = K / M. Let ρ\rho be half the sum of the positive restricted roots, counted with multiplicity. For x=gK∈Xx = g K \in X and b=kM∈Bb = k M \in B put A(x,b)=A(k−1g)A(x, b) = A(k^{-1} g). The Helgason Fourier transform of a smooth function ff with compact support on XX is the function on 𝔞ℂ∗×B\mathfrak a^*_\C \times B given by f~(λ,b)=∫Xf(x) e(−iλ+ρ)(A(x,b)) dx.\tilde f(\lambda, b) = \int_X f(x) \, e^{(-i \lambda + \rho)(A(x, b))} \, dx.

Remarks

The quantity A(x,b)A(x, b) is well defined: replacing gg by gk′g k' with k′∈Kk' \in K, or kk by kmk m with m∈Mm \in M, does not change A(k−1g)A(k^{-1} g), because MM normalizes NN and commutes with AA. Geometrically, A(x,b)A(x, b) is a vector-valued signed distance from the origin to the horocycle through xx with normal bb.

If ff is bi-KK-invariant, that is, radial on XX, then f~(λ,b)\tilde f(\lambda, b) does not depend on bb and equals the spherical transform f^(λ)\hat f(\lambda), by Harish-Chandra's integral formula for spherical functions. With suitable normalizations of the measures, the inversion formula is f(x)=1∣W∣∫𝔞∗∫Bf~(λ,b) e(iλ+ρ)(A(x,b)) ∣c(λ)∣−2 dλ db,f(x) = \frac{1}{\abs{W}} \int_{\mathfrak a^*} \int_B \tilde f(\lambda, b) \, e^{(i \lambda + \rho)(A(x, b))} \, \abs{c(\lambda)}^{-2} \, d\lambda \, db, where WW is the Weyl group and cc the Harish-Chandra c-function.

Example: for SL(2,ℝ)\mathrm{SL}(2, \R) acting on the upper half plane {z:Im⁡z>0}\set{z : \operatorname{Im} z > 0}, BB is the boundary circle. For the boundary point b=∞b = \infty, the function eρ(A(z,b))e^{\rho(A(z, b))} is a power of Im⁡z\operatorname{Im} z, constant on the horocycles Im⁡z=const\operatorname{Im} z = \text{const}.
