Definition
Let be a field with a valuation . Let be its valuation ring and its maximal ideal. The valued field is Henselian if the following holds. For every monic and every with and , there is with and .
Here is the formal derivative of .
Remarks
Example: for a prime , the field with the -adic valuation is Henselian; this is Hensel's lemma in its -adic form. More generally, a field that is complete for a valuation with values in is Henselian. Non-example: with the -adic valuation is not Henselian. Take and : and , but has no root in . Equivalent forms: is Henselian if and only if is a Henselian ring. It is Henselian if and only if extends to a unique valuation on each algebraic extension of . The element is then unique. Every field with the trivial valuation is Henselian.
