Definition

Let KK be a field, and let K[T,X]K[T, X] be the polynomial ring in two variables over KK. Consider irreducible polynomials f1,…,fm∈K[T,X]f_1, \dots, f_m \in K[T, X], each of positive degree in XX and separable in XX, and a nonzero g∈K[T]g \in K[T]. The field KK is Hilbertian if, for all such data, there is a∈Ka \in K such that:

  1. g(a)≠0g(a) \ne 0;
  2. for each ii, the polynomial fi(a,X)∈K[X]f_i(a, X) \in K[X] is irreducible over KK and has the same degree in XX as fif_i.

Remarks

If KK is Hilbertian, then for such data there are infinitely many a∈Ka \in K with these properties, since one can add to gg factors T−aT - a for the values already found. A Hilbertian field is infinite, and the same condition then holds with TT replaced by several variables T1,…,TrT_1, \dots, T_r. In characteristic 00, the separability condition is automatic, and KK is Hilbertian exactly when KK itself is not a thin subset of the affine line over KK.

Example: ℚ\Q is Hilbertian by Hilbert's irreducibility theorem, and so is every number field. For any field kk, the rational function field k(t)k(t) is Hilbertian.

Non-example: ℝ\R is not Hilbertian. The polynomial f=X2−T2−1f = X^2 - T^2 - 1 is irreducible in ℝ[T,X]\R[T, X], because T2+1T^2 + 1 is not a square in ℝ(T)\R(T). But for every a∈ℝa \in \R one has a2+1>0a^2 + 1 > 0, so f(a,X)=(X−a2+1)(X+a2+1)f(a, X) = (X - \sqrt{a^2 + 1})(X + \sqrt{a^2 + 1}) factors over ℝ\R. An algebraically closed field is not Hilbertian either, because every polynomial in XX of degree at least 22 factors over it.
