Definition
Let be an additive category. The homotopy category of chain complexes is the category defined as follows.
- Its objects are the chain complexes in .
- For complexes and , the morphisms are the chain maps modulo chain homotopy. Here if there are morphisms with for all .
- Composition is induced by the composition of chain maps.
Remarks
Chain homotopy is an equivalence relation compatible with sums and composition, so is again additive and composition is well defined. Example: in of abelian groups, the complex , in degrees and , is isomorphic to , since gives . Non-example: the complex is exact, but it is not isomorphic to in : a contraction would split each short exact sequence , and . If is abelian, homology is a functor on . Bounded variants , and use only complexes that are zero in all but finitely many degrees, in low degrees, or in high degrees.
