Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let f ⁣:ℝn×ℝ→ℝnf \colon \R^n \times \R \to \R^n be smooth, and consider the family of systems x′=f(x,μ)x' = f(x, \mu) with parameter μ\mu. Assume f(0,μ)=0f(0, \mu) = 0 for all μ\mu near 00, so that 00 is an equilibrium point for each such μ\mu. Let A(μ)A(\mu) be the Jacobian matrix of x↦f(x,μ)x \mapsto f(x, \mu) at 00. The family has a Hopf bifurcation at μ=0\mu = 0 if:

  1. A(μ)A(\mu) has a pair of simple complex conjugate eigenvalues α(μ)±iβ(μ)\alpha(\mu) \pm i \beta(\mu) for μ\mu near 00, with α(0)=0\alpha(0) = 0 and β(0)>0\beta(0) > 0;
  2. no other eigenvalue of A(0)A(0) has zero real part;
  3. α′(0)≠0\alpha'(0) \ne 0.

Remarks

Under these conditions, a family of periodic orbits branches off the equilibrium at μ=0\mu = 0, with periods close to 2π/β(0)2\pi / \beta(0). If moreover a certain coefficient ℓ1\ell_1, the first Lyapunov coefficient, is nonzero, the orbits exist for μ\mu on one side of 00 only and have amplitude of order ∣μ∣\sqrt{\abs{\mu}}. The bifurcation is supercritical when ℓ1<0\ell_1 < 0; in the plane the orbits are then stable limit cycles. It is subcritical when ℓ1>0\ell_1 > 0; the orbits are then unstable.

Example: x′=μx−y−x(x2+y2)x' = \mu x - y - x(x^2 + y^2), y′=x+μy−y(x2+y2)y' = x + \mu y - y(x^2 + y^2). The Jacobian at 00 is (μ−11μ)\begin{pmatrix} \mu & -1 \\ 1 & \mu \end{pmatrix}, with eigenvalues μ±i\mu \pm i. So α(μ)=μ\alpha(\mu) = \mu, β(μ)=1\beta(\mu) = 1, and all three clauses hold. In polar coordinates the system is r′=μr−r3r' = \mu r - r^3, θ′=1\theta' = 1, and the circle r=μr = \sqrt{\mu} is a stable limit cycle for μ>0\mu > 0.

Non-example: x′=μ2x−yx' = \mu^2 x - y, y′=x+μ2yy' = x + \mu^2 y. The eigenvalues are μ2±i\mu^2 \pm i, so α(μ)=μ2\alpha(\mu) = \mu^2 and α′(0)=0\alpha'(0) = 0; clause 3 fails.
