Hyperfunction
Definition
Let be an open set. Let be an open set with ; then is a closed subset of . For an open set , let be the space of holomorphic functions on . The space of hyperfunctions on is the quotient vector space where is embedded in by restriction. The class of is written .
Remarks
Up to canonical isomorphism, does not depend on the choice of . Write and for the restrictions of to the parts of above and below the real axis. One thinks of as . When both boundary values exist as distributions, this difference is a distribution, and every distribution on arises this way.
Example: on with , let on . The boundary values give , and this is the Dirac delta. So . A function holomorphic on all of gives the zero hyperfunction.
Non-example: for , the set does not qualify, because . With that choice, would also see singularities at the end points and , which lie outside .
In several variables the definition uses relative sheaf cohomology of the sheaf of holomorphic functions instead of a quotient.
