Definition

Let KK be a number field. For each place vv of KK, let KvK_v be the completion of KK at vv. For each finite place vv, let ๐’ชv\mathcal{O}_v be the ring of integers of KvK_v and ๐’ชvร—\mathcal{O}_v^\times its group of units. The idele group IKI_K is the set of families x=(xv)vx = (x_v)_v such that:

  1. xvโˆˆKvร—x_v \in K_v^\times for every place vv;
  2. xvโˆˆ๐’ชvร—x_v \in \mathcal{O}_v^\times for all but finitely many finite places vv.

It is a group under componentwise multiplication. Its topology has as a basis the sets โˆvโˆˆSUvร—โˆvโˆ‰S๐’ชvร—\prod_{v \in S} U_v \times \prod_{v \notin S} \mathcal{O}_v^\times. Here SS is a finite set of places containing all infinite places, and each UvU_v is open in Kvร—K_v^\times. The map aโ†ฆ(a,a,โ€ฆ)a \mapsto (a, a, \ldots) embeds Kร—K^\times in IKI_K as a discrete subgroup. The idele class group of KK is the quotient group CK=IK/Kร—,C_K = I_K / K^\times, with the quotient topology.

Remarks

Example: for K=โ„šK = \Q, the family with xโˆž=2x_\infty = 2, x3=1/3x_3 = 1/3 and xp=1x_p = 1 for all other pp is an idele, because only finitely many entries are not units. Non-example: the family with xp=px_p = p for every prime pp and xโˆž=1x_\infty = 1 is not an idele, because xpโˆ‰โ„คpร—x_p \notin \Z_p^\times for infinitely many pp. The ideles are the units of the adele ring ๐”ธK\mathbb{A}_K, but the topology above is finer than the subspace topology from ๐”ธK\mathbb{A}_K. The idele norm โˆฃxโˆฃ=โˆvโˆฃxvโˆฃv\abs{x} = \prod_v \abs{x_v}_v equals 11 on Kร—K^\times by the product formula, so it is defined on CKC_K. Its kernel CK1C_K^1 is compact. The ideal class group of KK is a quotient of CKC_K. The same construction works for every global field.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
