Incompressible surface
Builds on 3-manifoldSurfaceManifold with boundary
Definition
Let be a compact 3-manifold. Let be a compact connected surface that is neither a -sphere nor a closed -disk. Assume that is either properly embedded in (that is, ) or contained in . A compressing disk for is an embedded closed disk with such that the curve does not bound a disk in . The surface is incompressible if it has no compressing disk, and compressible otherwise.
Remarks
Example: let and . Let be a disk in with . The inclusion is a homotopy equivalence, so the loop , null-homotopic in , is null-homotopic in . A null-homotopic simple closed curve in a surface bounds a disk in it, so is not a compressing disk, and is incompressible.
Non-example: let be a solid torus and . The meridian disk meets in , and represents a nonzero class in , so it bounds no disk in . Hence is a compressing disk and is compressible.
If is two-sided, the loop theorem shows that is incompressible if and only if the inclusion induces an injective map . Some authors also call a -sphere incompressible when it does not bound a -ball in .
