Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a subring of . The integral closure of in is the set of the elements of that are integral over . The ring is integrally closed in if . For an integral domain , the integral closure of in its field of fractions is the normalization of .
Remarks
The set is a subring of that contains , and it is integrally closed in by transitivity of integrality.
Example: the integral closure of in is . If with is integral, then so is its conjugate, so and are rational and integral over , hence integers, and this forces .
Non-example: is not integrally closed in . The element is a root of , so it is integral over , but it is not in . The integral closure of in is .
