Integral extension

Builds on Integral elementSubringRing homomorphism

Definition

Let BB be a commutative ring and let AA be a subring of BB. The ring BB is integral over AA, and A⊆BA \subseteq B is an integral extension, if every element of BB is integral over AA. A ring homomorphism f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B of commutative rings is integral if BB is integral over the subring f(A)f(A).

Remarks

Example: ℤ⊆ℤ[i]\Z \subseteq \Z[i] is integral. The element a+bia + bi with a,b∈ℤa, b \in \Z is a root of the monic polynomial x2−2ax+a2+b2x^2 - 2a x + a^2 + b^2 with integer coefficients.

Non-example: ℤ⊆ℚ\Z \subseteq \Q is not integral, because 1/21/2 is not integral over ℤ\Z.

An extension is integral and of finite type if and only if it is finite. Integrality is transitive, and it is kept by quotients and localizations. If BB is integral over AA, then B/JB/J is integral over A/(J∩A)A/(J \cap A) for every ideal JJ of BB. Also S−1BS^{-1}B is integral over S−1AS^{-1}A for every multiplicative set SS of AA.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
