Jacobian conjecture
Builds on Characteristic of a ringPolynomial ringJacobian matrixJacobian determinant
Statement
Let be a field of characteristic and let . Let be polynomials, and let . Suppose that the Jacobian determinant is a nonzero constant in . Then there are polynomials such that satisfies .
Remarks
The converse holds: if has a polynomial inverse , the chain rule gives , so is a unit of the polynomial ring, that is, a nonzero constant. The conjecture is open for every ; the case is easy, since a polynomial with constant nonzero derivative has degree . The question was posed by Ott-Heinrich Keller in 1939. Characteristic is needed: over , the polynomial has derivative , but it has degree and is not invertible by a polynomial. It is known that the conjecture holds when all have degree at most . Bass, Connell and Wright showed that it suffices to prove it, for all , for maps of the form with homogeneous of degree .
