Statement

Let FF be a field, let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer invertible in FF, and let ζ∈F\zeta \in F be a primitive nn-th root of unity. For a,b∈F×a, b \in F^\times, let Aζ(a,b)A_\zeta(a, b) be the FF-algebra generated by two elements x,yx, y with the relations xn=a,yn=b,yx=ζxy.x^n = a, \qquad y^n = b, \qquad yx = \zeta xy. Then Aζ(a,b)A_\zeta(a, b) is a central simple algebra of dimension n2n^2 over FF. There is a unique group homomorphism Rn,ζ ⁣:K2(F)→Br⁡(F),{a,b}↦[Aζ(a,b)],R_{n, \zeta} \colon K_2(F) \to \operatorname{Br}(F), \qquad \set{a, b} \mapsto [A_\zeta(a, b)], from K2 of FF to the Brauer group of FF. Its image lies in the subgroup of elements of order dividing nn, and it vanishes on nK2(F)nK_2(F), so it induces K2(F)/n→Br⁡(F)[n]K_2(F)/n \to \operatorname{Br}(F)[n].

Remarks

By Matsumoto's theorem, it is enough to check that (a,b)↦[Aζ(a,b)](a, b) \mapsto [A_\zeta(a, b)] is a Steinberg symbol. Bimultiplicativity holds in the Brauer group: Aζ(a,b)⊗Aζ(a′,b)A_\zeta(a, b) \otimes A_\zeta(a', b) is Brauer equivalent to Aζ(aa′,b)A_\zeta(aa', b), and similarly in bb. For the relation {a,1−a}\set{a, 1 - a}, consider the main case where Xn−aX^n - a is irreducible and let αn=a\alpha^n = a. Then Aζ(a,b)A_\zeta(a, b) is the cyclic algebra of F(α)/FF(\alpha)/F with un=bu^n = b, and 1−a=∏i=0n−1(1−ζiα)1 - a = \prod_{i=0}^{n-1}(1 - \zeta^i \alpha) is a norm from F(α)F(\alpha), so Aζ(a,1−a)A_\zeta(a, 1 - a) is split.

Example: F=ℝF = \R, n=2n = 2, ζ=−1\zeta = -1. The algebra A−1(−1,−1)A_{-1}(-1, -1) is Hamilton's quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H}, a division algebra, so R2,−1({−1,−1})≠0R_{2, -1}(\set{-1, -1}) \ne 0 in Br⁡(ℝ)≅ℤ/2ℤ\operatorname{Br}(\R) \cong \Z/2\Z.

Going deeper

For a student

The algebras Aζ(a,b)A_\zeta(a, b) are called symbol algebras or power norm residue algebras; for n=2n = 2 they are the quaternion algebras (a,b)F(a, b)_F. The Merkurjev–Suslin theorem says that the induced map K2(F)/n→Br⁡(F)[n]K_2(F)/n \to \operatorname{Br}(F)[n] is an isomorphism. Over a local field the Brauer class of Aζ(a,b)A_\zeta(a, b) is determined by the norm residue symbol of aa and bb.
