K-theory K2 and Steinberg groups Theorem

Matsumoto's theorem

Builds on FieldK2 of a ringSteinberg symbolMilnor K-theory

Statement

Let FF be a field and let K2(F)K_2(F) be K2 of the ring FF. Then K2(F)K_2(F) is the abelian group generated by the symbols {a,b}\set{a, b}, for a,b∈F×a, b \in F^\times, subject only to the relations {aa′,b}={a,b}{a′,b},{a,bb′}={a,b}{a,b′},{a,1−a}=1 (a≠0,1).\set{aa', b} = \set{a, b}\set{a', b}, \qquad \set{a, bb'} = \set{a, b}\set{a, b'}, \qquad \set{a, 1 - a} = 1 \ (a \ne 0, 1). Equivalently, the map (a,b)↦{a,b}(a, b) \mapsto \set{a, b} is a universal Steinberg symbol. That is, let cc be a Steinberg symbol on FF with values in an abelian group AA. Then c(a,b)=h({a,b})c(a, b) = h(\set{a, b}) for a unique homomorphism h ⁣:K2(F)→Ah \colon K_2(F) \to A.

Remarks

In the language of Milnor K-theory, the theorem says that the natural map K2M(F)→K2(F)K_2^M(F) \to K_2(F) is an isomorphism. The symbol {a,b}\set{a, b} is defined in the Steinberg group as a commutator of lifts of the diagonal matrices diag⁡(a,a−1,1)\operatorname{diag}(a, a^{-1}, 1) and diag⁡(b,1,b−1)\operatorname{diag}(b, 1, b^{-1}). The hard part of the proof is the absence of other relations. From a Steinberg symbol one builds a central extension of SL(F)SL(F), and the universal property of the Steinberg group gives the homomorphism hh. Matsumoto proved a more general result for the universal central extensions of split simply connected groups over fields.

Example: by the theorem, the real Hilbert symbol induces h ⁣:K2(ℝ)→{±1}h \colon K_2(\R) \to \set{\pm 1} with h({−1,−1})=−1h(\set{-1, -1}) = -1, so {−1,−1}≠1\set{-1, -1} \ne 1 in K2(ℝ)K_2(\R).

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem turns classical symbols into homomorphisms out of K2K_2: the Hilbert symbol, the norm residue symbol and the tame symbol all factor through K2(F)K_2(F). This is how one computes K2(ℚ)K_2(\Q) with tame symbols and relates K2(F)K_2(F) to the Brauer group. It is also the starting point of Milnor K-theory, which takes the same generators and relations in every degree.
