Statement

Let GG be a finite multigraph without loops, with vertices v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n and n≥2n \ge 2. Let DD be the diagonal matrix of the vertex degrees. Let AA be the matrix with Aii=0A_{ii} = 0 and AijA_{ij} the number of edges between viv_i and vjv_j for i≠ji \ne j. Let L=D−AL = D - A be the Laplacian matrix of GG. For each ii, let LiL_i be the matrix obtained from LL by deleting row ii and column ii. Then the number of spanning trees of GG equals det⁡Li\det L_i, for every i∈{1,…,n}i \in \set{1, \dots, n}.

Remarks

Orient each edge and let BB be the n×mn \times m incidence matrix, with entries +1+1 and −1-1 at the head and tail of each edge; then L=BBTL = B B^T. Delete row ii of BB to get BiB_i, so that Li=BiBiTL_i = B_i B_i^T. By the Cauchy–Binet formula, det⁡Li\det L_i is the sum of (det⁡N)2(\det N)^2 over the (n−1)×(n−1)(n-1) \times (n-1) submatrices NN of BiB_i. Such a minor is ±1\pm 1 if its n−1n - 1 edges form a spanning tree and 00 otherwise, which gives the count.

Example: for the triangle K3K_3, every vertex has degree 22 and L3=(2−1−12),det⁡L3=3,L_3 = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \det L_3 = 3, which matches the 33 spanning trees obtained by removing one edge. For the complete graph KnK_n the theorem gives nn−2n^{n-2}, which is Cayley's formula. If GG is not connected, both sides are 00.

For a student

An equivalent form uses the eigenvalues 0=μ1≤μ2≤⋯≤μn0 = \mu_1 \le \mu_2 \le \dots \le \mu_n of LL: the number of spanning trees is 1nμ2⋯μn\frac{1}{n} \mu_2 \cdots \mu_n. This links spectral graph theory to enumeration. The theorem goes back to Kirchhoff's study of electrical networks. It has a weighted version, where each edge carries a variable and the determinant sums the weights of the spanning trees, and a version for directed graphs that counts arborescences.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
