Statement
Let be a connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie group with Lie algebra . The exponential map is then a diffeomorphism. Let be the dual space of with the coadjoint action, the dual of the adjoint representation. Fix a Lebesgue measure on , and let be the Haar measure on that is its image under . Let be an irreducible unitary representation of , and let be the coadjoint orbit attached to by the Kirillov orbit method. Let be the Liouville measure of the canonical symplectic form on , normalized suitably in terms of . Then for every smooth compactly supported function on , the operator is trace class, and
Remarks
In words, the character of , pulled back to by , is the Fourier transform of the orbital measure . The proof goes by induction on . In the induction step, either is induced from a normal subgroup of codimension one, or factors through the quotient of by a central one-parameter subgroup. The sign in matches the convention in which is induced from the character of a polarizing subgroup.
Example: for the orbits are points , the representations are the characters , and the formula reduces to . For the Heisenberg group and an orbit with , the formula shows that the character of the Schrödinger representation is a distribution supported on the centre.
For some other Lie groups and some of their representations a version of Kirillov's formula holds with a correction: near in one multiplies by , where . For nilpotent , is nilpotent and , so no correction is needed.

For a student
The formula is the strongest form of the orbit method for nilpotent groups. It makes the bijection between orbits and representations compatible with characters. It also identifies the Plancherel measure. Integrating the formula over all orbits gives Fourier inversion on , so the Plancherel measure is the image of Lebesgue measure on in the space of orbits. For compact connected Lie groups an analogous formula holds with the correction factor . There the representation of highest weight uses the orbit through , and the formula is equivalent to the Weyl character formula.
