Builds on Noetherian ringIntegral domainField of fractionsKrull dimensionLength of a module
Statement
Let be a Noetherian integral domain of Krull dimension . Let be the field of fractions of and let be a finite field extension of . Let be a ring with . Then is Noetherian and has Krull dimension at most . Moreover, for every nonzero ideal of , the quotient has finite length as an -module.
Remarks
The general case reduces to the case . There the key step is the bound for each nonzero , where is the length; the right side is finite because has dimension . Each nonzero ideal of contains a nonzero element of , so has finite length, and is finitely generated. A main application: the integral closure of in is a Noetherian integrally closed domain of dimension at most , that is, a Dedekind domain or a field. For example, with and a number field, this shows that the ring of integers of is Noetherian. The ring need not be a finitely generated -module, so the result is not a consequence of Hilbert's basis theorem.

For a student
The theorem is the standard route to the following fact. The integral closure of a one-dimensional Noetherian domain in a finite extension of its fraction field is a Dedekind domain, even when it is not a finite module. It is special to dimension : for any Noetherian domain, the Mori–Nagata theorem only gives a Krull domain, and the integral closure can fail to be Noetherian. The proof uses lengths of modules and the fact that is Artinian for .
