Definition
Let be an open set, and let be real constants, the Lamé parameters, with and . Let be a given body force. The Lamé equations of static linear elasticity are the system for an unknown vector field , the displacement. Here is the Laplacian acting on each component, is the divergence and is the gradient. For a body of constant density , the dynamic Lamé equations are .
Remarks
The conditions and make the elastic energy positive definite on symmetric strains. They imply , so the system is strongly elliptic.
Example: for and , the rigid displacement is a solution. Each component of is affine, so , and .
Non-example: for , is not a solution. Here and , so the left side is .
The equations come from the balance of forces with Hooke's law for the stress . In the dynamic equations, pressure waves travel at speed and shear waves at speed .
