Definition
Let be real numbers and let be twice continuously differentiable. Assume that has a unique global maximum on at a point with , and that the second derivative satisfies . Laplace's method is the approximation of for large by the integral of over . Under these assumptions it gives the asymptotic equivalence
Remarks
Example: Stirling's formula. Substituting gives . The function has its maximum at , with and , and after a check that the tails are small the method gives .
Non-example: if the maximum is at an endpoint, for instance on , the hypothesis fails. Here , which decays like and not like .
The same idea applies to with continuous and , where the right side gains the factor .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
