Definition
Let be a smooth manifold, let be a smooth vector field on , and let be the local flow of . Let be a smooth tensor field on , and let be its pullback by the local diffeomorphism . The Lie derivative of along is the tensor field given at each by
Remarks
For a smooth function , , the derivative of in the direction of . For a vector field , , the Lie bracket. For a differential form , Cartan's formula gives . Example: on let and ; then , as is invariant under the rotations . Non-example of tensoriality: is not -linear in , since . So depends on near , not only on ; this is the difference with a covariant derivative. The Lie derivative is a derivation: , and it commutes with contractions.
