Definition
Let be a set of prime numbers. Let be the localization of at : the rational numbers whose denominators are divisible by no prime in . Let be a simply connected CW complex. The space is -local if each homotopy group , , is a -module, that is, multiplication by every prime is bijective on it. A -localization of is a map to a simply connected -local space such that induces isomorphisms For one has , and is called a rationalization, written .
Remarks
Every simply connected CW complex has a -localization, unique up to homotopy equivalence under . The condition on homotopy groups is equivalent to: induces isomorphisms in reduced singular homology for all . The localization is universal: every map from to a -local space factors through , uniquely up to homotopy. The theory extends to nilpotent spaces.
Example: for odd, the map that represents a generator of is a rationalization. Indeed, is for and otherwise, by Serre's finiteness theorem, which matches the homotopy of .
Non-example: the identity of is not a rationalization, because is not -local for : is not a -vector space.
