Definition

Work on Minkowski space ℝ1,3\R^{1,3}. Let GSM=SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1)G_{\mathrm{SM}} = SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1), built from the special unitary groups and the unitary group U(1)U(1). Write an irreducible representation of GSMG_{\mathrm{SM}} as (a,b)Y(a, b)_Y. Here aa is the dimension of the SU(3)SU(3) factor, and 3ˉ\bar 3 is the dual of the defining representation. The number bb is the dimension of the SU(2)SU(2) factor. The hypercharge YY says that eiθ∈U(1)e^{i\theta} \in U(1) acts by eiYθe^{iY\theta}, up to a fixed normalization. The Standard Model is the gauge theory with gauge group GSMG_{\mathrm{SM}} and the following fields.

  1. A connection with values in the Lie algebra 𝔰𝔲(3)⊕𝔰𝔲(2)⊕𝔲(1)\mathfrak{su}(3) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{u}(1): the gluon, WW and BB fields.
  2. Three generations of left-handed Weyl spinor fields, each generation consisting of Q∈(3,2)1/6Q \in (3, 2)_{1/6}, uc∈(3ˉ,1)−2/3u^c \in (\bar 3, 1)_{-2/3}, dc∈(3ˉ,1)1/3d^c \in (\bar 3, 1)_{1/3}, L∈(1,2)−1/2L \in (1, 2)_{-1/2} and ec∈(1,1)1e^c \in (1, 1)_{1}.
  3. A complex scalar field, the Higgs field H∈(1,2)1/2H \in (1, 2)_{1/2}.

The Lagrangian density is the most general one that is Lorentz invariant, gauge invariant and renormalizable. That is, it is a polynomial in the fields and their covariant derivatives of mass dimension at most 44. It consists of Yang–Mills terms for the three factors and kinetic terms iχˉσˉμDμχi \bar\chi \bar\sigma^\mu D_\mu \chi for each Weyl field χ\chi. It also has the term (DμH)†DμH−V(H)(D_\mu H)^\dagger D^\mu H - V(H) with V(H)=−μ2H†H+λ(H†H)2V(H) = -\mu^2 H^\dagger H + \lambda (H^\dagger H)^2, and Yukawa terms that couple HH to pairs of fermion fields.

Remarks

The electric charge of a field component is Qem=T3+YQ_{\mathrm{em}} = T_3 + Y, where T3=±12T_3 = \pm\frac12 is the weak isospin of the component of a doublet. For example the two components of LL have charges 00 and −1-1, the neutrino and the electron. The two components of QQ have charges 23\frac23 and −13-\frac13, the up and the down quark. When μ2>0\mu^2 > 0 the potential VV has its minima on the sphere H†H=μ2/(2λ)H^\dagger H = \mu^2 / (2\lambda). Then the Higgs mechanism gives masses to the WW and ZZ bosons and, through the Yukawa terms, to the fermions.

Check of the hypercharges: in each generation the sum of Y3Y^3 over all left-handed Weyl fields, counted with multiplicity, is 6⋅1216+3⋅(−827)+3⋅127+2⋅(−18)+1=06 \cdot \frac{1}{216} + 3 \cdot (-\frac{8}{27}) + 3 \cdot \frac{1}{27} + 2 \cdot (-\frac18) + 1 = 0. This is one of the conditions for the cancellation of gauge anomalies.

Non-example: a mass term m L ecm \, L \, e^c without the Higgs field is not gauge invariant. Indeed LL is an SU(2)SU(2) doublet and ece^c a singlet, and the hypercharges −12+1-\frac12 + 1 do not add up to 00. The gauge-invariant Yukawa term y H†L ecy \, H^\dagger L \, e^c becomes such a mass term when HH takes its vacuum value.

The group that acts faithfully on the fields is the quotient of GSMG_{\mathrm{SM}} by a cyclic subgroup of order 66. The model contains no right-handed neutrinos; observed neutrino masses require an extension of it.
