Definition
Let be a set. A measurable space is a pair , where is a σ-algebra on . The elements of are the measurable sets of .
Remarks
The real line with its Borel σ-algebra is a measurable space, because is a σ-algebra by its definition. Any set with its power set is a measurable space, and so is with . For , the pair is not a measurable space. The family is not closed under complements, since is missing. A map between measurable spaces and is called measurable when for every . Some authors call a measurable space a Borel space.
