Milne-Thomson circle theorem
Builds on Complex potentialPotential flowHolomorphic function
Statement
Let and let be the complex potential of a two-dimensional, incompressible and irrotational flow in the plane . Assume that is holomorphic in a neighbourhood of the closed disc . Define and Then is the complex potential of a flow in the region with the following properties.
- The circle is a streamline of .
- In , the function has the same singularities as .
Remarks
On the circle, , so and is real. Hence the stream function vanishes on the circle. The function is holomorphic wherever is holomorphic at the conjugate point. So the singularities of are the image points of the singularities of outside the disc. These image points lie inside the disc. Example: the uniform stream gives , the potential flow around a circular cylinder. A point source at outside the circle produces an image source at and a sink of the same strength at the centre.

For a student
The theorem is the circle version of the method of images. Combined with conformal maps such as the Joukowsky transform, it produces potential flows past airfoils and other shapes from flows past a circle. The forces on the cylinder can then be computed with the Blasius theorem.
